Frustration!

So I'm moving. Yay! But I was supposed to move today before the shit hit the fan.

So I stayed home from work today to pack more stuff and move. I got the cashiers check that morning and drove it out to Jane who had to still go sign the lease. She was then going to pay them and get the keys. The only people who had said they could help us move were Jamie and Mackenzie.

Well that didn't happen.

Here's the senario. I'm finished all packing that I could possibly do for the time (I ran out of boxes). At this point Jane's already an hour and a half late, and I haven't heard from Mackenzie since threeish when she said that she had to pick Jamie up at four and then would come over. Jane doesn't have a cell phone, and Mackenzie isn't answering hers when I call or text message. I leave a message on the door and go out to buy the beer that I promised Mackenzie for helping us move. I come back, no one's there still. By this time it's 7:15p.m. and everyone's at least 2 hours and 15 minutes late. Mackenzie's still not answering her phone. I call U-Haul. They're now closed and won't let me pick up the truck (which I couldn't pick up until someone was here to drive my car back while I drove the truck). About an hour later Jane shows up. She said she got caught in crazy ass trafic, and she kept calling Amy and Mackenzie on their cell phones(using Will's phone since she doesn't have a cell phone) to try and get my number (which she had left back ather house) in order to tell me what was going on and to let me know she wasn't dead. No one would answer her and no one would call her back either. She was extremely frustrated, and very let down too when she got here and saw that no one else showed up either and that we lost our truck because of it.

So now we're trying to find a truck for tomorrow, but things are looking dim because it's a weekend. Plus Jane has to go to rehearsal at 3. I'm just really frustrated by the whole situation. I know some of my friends had valid excuses as to why they couldn't help, but there were all these other people who either wouldn't even get back to me, or they had promised to help us move a couple weeks ago, and now avoided our calls like a plague. Not even friends who are just sorta friends, but close friends who I know will be wanting to come over the the apartment all the time and hang out. What great friends I have right. Whatever. I need to sleep now since I have to be up at the crack of dawn trying to find a truck.

A very interesting night

Tonight I was planning on going out to the Owl Bar for Tracy's 21st birthday, but it got postponed because she has the flu (poor Tracy!). So instead I went out with Jason and Autum (?) to Orpheus since I hadn't been in a long time and I was feeling like having fun.

The night started off fine. I had a couple of drinks (one I didn't have to pay for because Joe the bartender loves us and gives us free drinks all the time. He actually came out to see "The Cagebirds" a couple weeks ago too!) Autum and I danced some, good times had by all. Then the night started to get akward. Jason got into a pissy mood because I bugged him to dance with Autum during a slow song that they played for a newlywed couple. I stopped after he started getting pissy and dropped the subject. But then Jen came up and randomly asked "Why weren't the two of you up there dancing?" and agitated him some more. She had no idea that he was already pissy about it. Then he lost $20. That set him off into another bad mood. Him and Autum fought a bit about it. I had to go off to follow her a couple times when she stormed off to calm her down. Things were really tense, and I wasn't having any fun.

Then Drunk man came up. He started talking to Autum because he said she looked sad. Then he started talking to me. I had to keep myself from laughing out loud so many times. This was our first interaction:

Drunk Dude: Hi. I'm Markus.

Me: Hi, I'm Kelly.

Drunk Dude/Markus: Kelly, You have curly hair. And that's Awesome.

Me: Thanks... it's not really something I can control.

Drunk Dude/Markus: Exactly.

He went away for a while and Autum and I laughed about it for a while. Then another tiff between Jason and her took us to the bathroom. After a while things calmed down between them and everyone was happy again. Up comes Markus again to flirt with me some more. He actually wasn't so bad once he seemed to sober up a little. He's 26 and was a student at UMBC, but taking a semester off to earn money to finish up. He started saying a bunch of poetry to me, which was.... odd. I'm really not a huge poetry person. Periodically he veered the conversation back to me having Curly hair and glasses, and how he likes that. I didn't really acknowledge that so much and continued talking about intellegent things. At one point he made the comment "Stop being such a person! You're supposed to be an object of my facination with curly hair and glasses!" to which I replies "well... sorry, can't help it. I AM a person. We then talked about theatre. I'm not sure if he really knew what I was talking about. He asked me who my favorite playwrights were, and I listed them off, to which he replies with "I'm a Tennesee Williams Fan" I'm not sure if he actually knew anything about Theatre or if that was the only author he really knew so he wanted to sound informed in the area. Either way, he wasn't so bad again when the conversation was about intelligent things. Then the major flirting started. He said some corny line like "I want come just come back to your place and read poetry to you. Nothing sexual, just poetry!" Yeeeeaaaaaaah. Suuuuure, nothing sexual. What, was I born yesterday? I let him down gently saying that I came with other people, maybe next time. Later he changed his tune and went back to the curly hair and glasses thing saying that he did want to have sex with me because of that. I don't think I even replied. I think a Gorillaz song came on then and Autum and I escaped to dance. We danced for a while and then came back because they were shutting down. They were on the last song, and we didnt' know it, so had no desire to stay on the dance floor. Markus comes back up to me and said something like "You're impervious to suggestion" to which I replied "Sorry, I'm just not that easy." I guess I heard him wrong. Aparently he actually said "The DJ is impervious to suggestion" because they kept saying that it was the last song and then played three more songs after that. He then proceeded to try and make me know that he wasn't suggesting that I was easy and then said (since he was leaving) that he hoped to see me there next week (which I won't be because I'm moving next Sat. and even if I finish in time I'm going to Tracy's postponed B-Day bash).

Later in the car ride back to my house I was telling Jason and Dave what Markus had been saying. Dave was very drunk, and tends to be hillarious when he's drunk. "Did you at least get him to buy you a drink?" he asked. I hadn't. I don't know how to do that kind of thing.... to which Dave went off on a rant about boobies and the magic of them and how they can get me drinks anyday. I haven't laughed as hard as I did in the car with Dave in a long time. Of course the subject of Boobies then turned into how if Dave had boobies he'd never leave the house.

I'm not sure what to make of this Markus thing. Sometimes when I was talking to him he seemed smart and cool. I'm not sure if he's actually into poetry as much as he said or if it was a thing to try and get girls. I'm not sure what I think of the whole situation. I'm already really thrown off because I don't really ever get hit on. Even if I'm not interested, it's nice to think that someone out there was at least interested, even if alcohol might have had a part in it. He did kiss my hand when he left. That was kinda nice. Eh, we'll see what happens. He didn't ask for my number, but deffinately seemed interested.

Crazy Crazy night.

In my voice class we have to pick a poen about 8-10 lines long from one of the following poets: Langston Hughes, Emily Dickenson, Wallace Stevens, Gwendolyn Brooks, W.H. Auden, Siegfried Sassoon, E.E. Cummings, Owen Dodson, Rita Dove, Marianne Moore, and Aphra Behn.

Now a lot of those names are very familiar, and I'm sure it would be easy to find twenty million good poems by Langston Hughes or Emily Dickenson, but I of course wanted to challenge myself and actually research this a little. I read some other poems by some of the other poets, and while I could probably pick something that's gorgeous and "a piece of art", like many of the sonet sounding poems I found, I can't help but come back to this poem by Gwendolyn Brooks.

The Crazy Woman

I shall not sing a May song
A May song should be gay.
I'll wait until November
And sing a song of gray.

I'll wait until November
That is the time for me.
I'll go out in the frosty dark
And sing most terribly.

And all the little people
Will stare at me and say,
"That is the Crazy Woman
Who would not sing in May".

It's so simple, but it speaks to me. I feel like I need to use this poem.

my picks for PR's final three

We're at that point where I am ready to pick the three people I want in the top three. Out of who's left over (providing tonight doesn't change too drastically) this is my pick for final three:

Uli
Michael
Jeffery

I know a lot of people don't like Jeffery, but I love his designs. We'll see if I'm anywhere close as the weeks go on.

Tuesday, August 29, 2006; Posted: 9:43 PM - by James Howard

SUMMER 2006 THEATRE IN BALTIMORE IS IN THE PAST, POINTS TO FUTURE

Is it just me, or was this summer’s theatre season pretty darned good? Between June and August, Baltimore theatres has much to offer. Here is my list of the Best of Summer 2006 Theatre in Charm City (in alphabetical order by Company):

* The 25th Season of the Baltimore Playwright’s Festival

* Taming of the Shrew, Chesapeake Shakespeare Company
* An Inspector Calls, Cockpit-in-Court
* Gypsy, Maryland Arts Festival
* Date with a Stranger/The Cagebirds, Spotlighters
* Southern Baptist Sissies, Spotlighters

* Footloose: The Musical, Toby’s Dinner Theatre of Baltimore

This summer also showed local theatre goers that the future is, indeed, bright. The 20-something crowd has some remarkable talents, both in front of and behind the footlights. Among the brightest new performers this summer are (in alphabetical order): J. McCaul Baggett (actor, Split), Ian Belknap (director, Split), Kurt Boehm (actor-singer-dancer, Footloose: The Musical), Ian Bonds, actor, An Inspector Calls & director, Date with a Stranger), Kelly Cavanaugh (director-actor, The Cagebirds), Stacey Eckler (actor, Gypsy, Date with a Stranger), Ira Gamerman (playwright, Split), Courtney Krimmel (actor, Hope’s Arbor), Kathryn Lyles (actor-singer-dancer, Gypsy), Alex Peri (actor, Southern Baptist Sissies), Steve Polites (actor, Split), Michael Stettes (actor, Date with a Stranger), Alexander Scully (actor, The Cagebirds), Andrew Syropoulos (actor, Southern Baptist Sissies) and Becca Vourvoulas (actor-singer-dancer, Footloose: The Musical).
I'm on a permanent high

I swear, I feel like my theatrical career has been taking off this year. This week we got that AMAZING review that's posted right before this, and I was floating through the air. I think the cast pretty much has that review memorized. And the thing is, this guy doesn't just give good reviews. He's actually been asked not to return to certain theatres because they couldn't take all the bad reviews. He definately gives a lot more bad reviews then good reviews. Then, to top that off, Fuzz, the director of Spotlighters theatre has aked us to extend our run! They've lost their first show of the season and they've decided they want to do two more weekend of one acts. They're going to add in two more one acts to go along with our two one acts. They're going to use the wonderful review as part of the advertising. By the way, the review also helped us to double our house size last night!

If that wasn't fantastic enough, something amazing happened. After my show ended and the lights went down, the audience went wild! I mean they didn't just clap and do a few "woos!" here and there. They were cheering! Very loud, very verbal! It was so invigurating! Fuzz even said to Stacey and me, "I expected the shows to be good, but Damn! I didn't expect them to be like this!" My dad and sister and dad's girlfriend are driving in today. We're going to take a trip to D.C. tomorrow and then they're going to go see the show on Sunday. I'm hoping for another large house on Sunday. I know besides those three that Stacey's aunt and grandmother are coming, Andy's coming, Tracy's sister and sisters friends are coming, and Amy's parents are coming. Exciting exciting exciting! I love the people in my cast. I couldn't have asked for a better cast. I needed this after "Hello Dolly!" I'm not saying that the show was bad. I think we did the best we could under the circumstances. But this show by far surpases. My cast has made me proud. And what Fuzz has done with the lights combined with my Sound design makes it all the more amazing.

If you haven't seen the show yet, you really should come out! It'll totally be worth it, I promise!

Review of the show!

http://baltimore.broadwayworld.com/ - Go there to see it for yourself!

Wednesday, August 23, 2006; Posted: 11:25 AM - by James Howard

If you have ever been to Spotlighters Theatre, you know that executive director Fuzz Roark introduces each performance with an anecdote about the late Audrey Herman, the woman responsible for Spotlighters’ existence. It seems that 40 plus years ago, she felt that the Baltimore theatre scene lacked an outlet for new, untried talent to develop their skills. What is happening on that stage this week must have her smiling down from Heaven. The very definition of what she was looking for has taken the stage in the form of two one act plays. The group is a small band of college friends, all theatre enthusiasts from Towson University, CCBC – Essex and UMBC, who needed a place to put on a play – self produced, cast and directed. Roark had space on the calendar and obliged them the chance to present their work on four off nights when the current tenant, Hope’s Arbor, is dark.

One might expect a thrown together evening of vanity performances or a series of smug self-important indulgences from such a group. But the opposite, thankfully, is true. Congratulations is due not only to the cast and directors, but to the teachers, artists and inspirations that have gotten these young folk to the terrific level they are currently performing. Local college programs are succeeding at all levels, if these new artists are any example of what they are producing. Bravo to all concerned!

The first act of the two, Date with a Stranger by Cherie Vogelstein concerns two young New Yorkers who meet at a coffee bar and have a 15 minute whirlwind relationship. Highly theatrical in language and format, the dialogue often seems like stream of consciousness, with ideas and time frames changed within a single sentence. It is truly a tribute to the quality of the actors (the utterly charming Stacey Eckler and assured, sexy, but humble, Michael Stettes) that their timing is razor sharp, nary a line is flubbed or choked, and we can follow every single twist and turn of the plot as it speeds past us like a runaway train. Their presence, chemistry and vocal quality is exemplary, and in an unbelievable situation, they are completely believable. Both young actors are on my growing list of must see performers. Here’s hoping both have a long career. The same goes for the play’s director, Ian Bonds (who also has a small role) who directs in this in-the-round-space like a pro. No side is left unable to see, the movement is realistic, unforced and interesting. Bonds clearly knows what he is doing.

The second act, The Cagebirds by David Campton reminds me of exactly the kinds of plays I did in college – very theatrical, high concept, and just high brow enough to merit much deep discussion during rehearsal. Here we have seven actors portraying the “human” characteristics of a group of caged birds, all run by a mysterious “Mistress” (played by director Kelly Cavanaugh) who coos over them, calling them her sweeties, and lulling them into submission with her unnerving gentle voice. Each bird represents a different personality type in society. What they know as normal, though, is soon thrown into chaos when the Mistress adds a bird, The Wild One, to the cage (played with great urgency and cunning by Ali Rodriguez). The ensemble of six actors playing the original birds gives terrific performances, each unique and very concentrated, but all fitting perfectly together as a cohesive unit when necessary. Amy Haynes as The Gossip has a terrific sneer and haughty carriage perfect for one who gossips, but wouldn’t be caught dead talking about others. Jamie Scanlon provides a new twist on a popular theme, as the self-absorbed Gazer. Instead of the obvious, bigger than life ego-maniac, she is very low key and completely into herself and her mirror – a nice change. As nervous Twitting, Tracy Dye also goes well beyond the boring stereotype of someone on edge. She brings fresh movement, gesture and superb vocalizing together to create a unique, yet familiar character. Jane Steffen as The Great Guzzler seems the most bird like as she twitches and pecks at minute bits of food throughout the entire play. She is completely absorbed by the character – one wonders if she is at all aware of anything but the play, she is so focused. Nick Steigerwald, as The Thump, is appropriately annoying, grating, and loud as he spouts off bits of wisdom and complaint. While he has the least to say and work with, he still makes quite a presence. Finally, Alexander Scully as hypochondriac The Medicated Gloom, is quite a presence as well, balancing a one note character with believable, extremely specific stage business and a great use of his entire voice (who knew whining could be so interesting?). Miss Cavanaugh’s direction matches the play perfectly – it is symbolic, creative, thought provoking, and definitely high-brow theatrical. The entire evening presents young people in a most wonderful light – one, unfortunately, that isn’t shed in public often these days. Their exuberance, vitality and love for their craft are intoxicating. One hopes they all continue to grow and that they continue to find venues for their worthy products. By all means, don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to see the future of Baltimore theatre.

WHO: Spotlighters WHAT: An Evening of 2 One Acts WHEN: Thursday, August 24th at 8PM and Sunday, August 27th at 2PM HOW MUCH: $15 general, $12 students, seniors and BTA members (more...)

Come check it out!! As you can see above, you won't regret it!

Crisis Solved!

So there I was sitting backstage in the middle of my tech week for "The Cagebirds" with my cast gathered around to run lines when all my problems were magically solved.

I was telling Nick about how I need to get out of my place. Things have just gotten worse since yesterday. There was another note on my door in retaliation of my note (which was in retaliation of her note.... you see the pattern) where my land lady all of a sudden decided she could change her story from the note before so where she hadn't actually completely entered my house (which it isn't possible from what she said in her note before, where she admits to coming all the way upstairs), and also how she claims that I gave her permission when I told her for that one month at the begining of the summer that she could turn on my air conditioning (permission that I took away in July not only to her face but in a note). In other words she believes that because she once was allowed to come up at a certain time a month ago that she now has free reign to the place. Sorry, it doesn't work that way. She also said in the note that she refused to give me Donna (her grand daughter who I've gone to about disputes and who is the actual technical owner of the place since it's been put in her name) because she's the one renting it to me (blah blah blah). Funny thing is that at the bottom of the long ass note Donna had clearly snuck out there and written her number on it(it was in her hand writing and everything).

Anyways, back to saving my sanity. I was telling Nich about all of this and Jane pipes up "well..... I need to move out..." I had never thought of Jane, but it made sense! "I think I could live with you!" "I think I could live with you too!" Both of us are really excited. Now we can find a nice place to share and spend less then we were both figuring we would have to spend. We were both figuring that we'd have to spend $500 at least for a 1 bedroom, but now we can get a really nice 2 bedroom for around $800.... that's $100 less a month for both of us! We're both really excited. I've already been looking for places. yay!!!

The war continues

My landlady and I are in a war. And I think I might have won. We'll see...

I've suspected that my landlady has been coming up in my apartment and turning off my air conditioner during the day. I kept trying to set traps, but nothing was working. So instead I set out yucky things where she would have to walk. I didn't like it, but it was a price I had to pay. And it paid off. I got a note on my door yesterday where she admitted to coming into my place randomly and demanded I clean and stuff like that.

Now I have written proof that she has broken federal law and entered my home without advance notice. And now I can clean up the mess.

I'm getting so sick of living there. the cheap rent is starting to not be worth it. I can't have people over, nothing ever gets fixed, and then she pulls this stupid crap. Seriously, I've had a broken window (that she broke mind you) for over 2 years. 2 years!!! Anything that ever gets fixed is done by my friends as favors to me. The only thing she's ever done up there is have someone do a really bad job of putting these panel thingys over rotted walls in the bathroom. This was a couple months after I moved in 3 1/2 years ago. She said that she was going to clean up the orange goonk that they got everywhere (I'm not even sure what it was, it's the stuff they used to stick the plastic thingy to the wall) and now 3 1/2 years later THAT still isn't done. I'm at the end of my rope.

My first directing show to be reviewed!

Spotlighters will present a special event - two one act plays directed, produced and starring all local talent. The plays are: Date with a Stranger by Cherie Vogelstein and The Cagebirds by David Campton, with direction by new directors, Ian Bonds and Kelly Cavanaugh, respectively. Date with a Stranger chronicles the chance encounter between two young New Yorkers, who proceed to carry out a long, dynamic relationship in the span of fifteen minutes, all within the confines of the very coffee shop where they meet. The Cagebirds is about seven "birds" who have been locked away by "The Mistress" to be kept as pets. Each "bird" who has lived contently with this concept knows only their individual world and the world of The Mistress. Later, The Mistress adds "The Wild One" to the cage, who pushes the other birds to revolt and break free, turning their world upside down. Performances are Thursdays at 8PM, August 17 and 24, and Sundays at 2PM, August 20 and 27. Tickets are $15, $12 for seniors, students and BTA members.

(To be reviewed 08/20/2006 – Baltimore.BroadwayWorld.com)

I'm extremely excited and extremely nervous at the same time.

Extra Extra!!

Keep an eye out everyone! There should be an article in Sunday's paper in the Baltimore Sun about the two one-acts that Stacey and I are producing/directing/in.

Unfortunately, what I gathered from talking to Fuzz yesterday is that not all of the info is going to to completely accurate.

#1
Fuzz - "What college did you and Ian just graduate from?"

Kelly - "Well, I graduated from CCBC Essex, but Ian didn't finish school."

Fuzz - "Oh, well it might say that he's a recent theatre graduate."

#2
Fuzz - "In your caged birds... cagebird.... you know what I mean, is it all women?"

Kelly - "No. Originally it was written that way but I took some liberties and cast some of the roles as male."

Fuzz - "Oh, well it might say that it's a play with five women."

Kelly - "Okay... it's actually 8 characters, not five...."

So needless to say this might be an interesting article, but hey, any press is good press! Remember to come see the show everyone!!

August 17, 24th at 8p.m.
August 20, 27th at 2p.m.

Spotlighters theatre!!! www.spotlighters.org Go there for ticket info!

You strive hard to be a successful person and there is little in life that can sway you away from your goals.

Click Here to Take This Quiz
Brought to you by YouThink.com quizzes and personality tests.

grr. I'm frustrated about the one act project that Stacey and I are producing/in/directing. I filled out my portion of the media kit as soon as it was given to me and sent it back to Stacey to check over the info I wrote about her and for her and Ian (who's directing her show) to finish. And of course this didn't get done. So I bitched at her about it yesterday and she promished to make Ian finish it. I don't know if he did or not, but the finished product sent out was exactly the same thing I was looking at yesterday when I was bitching, still no information about "Date With A Stranger". Frustrating! It makes me feel like I'm the only one who cares about this thing. This thing is important if we want to have press come to the show, and I certainly want press to be there! The longer we wait to get the press kit back to Fuzz at Spots the less likely we'll be able to get newspapers to comit to coming. I don't know about you, but I'd love to have a show I direct get reviewed. Especially when it all seems to be coming together so well.

It also looks like I'm going to have to be in the show. Lindsey was cast as "The Mistress" and can't do it because of the rehearsal schedule. I tried finding an appropriate replacement, but Tanika couldn't do it, Rosie never got back to me about when she's available with Peter Pan going on, and Will never responded back to me either. Now that the show is only a couple weeks away, I'm going to have to do it. I hate being in my own shows.

By the way, When is Peter Pan performing? I want to come see it, but I don't know the dates and times. I guess this is more of a question for Juba and Rosie. Let me know!

In the meantime.... Put down on your callenders to come see the two one acts at Spots.

August 17th and 24th at 8p.m.
August 20th and 27th at 2p.m.

I have the most active dreams. Problem is, I can't remember them when I wake up. I always wake up sort of amazed or shocked, sort of like a "Did that just happen?!" but of course a second later I can't remember the slightest thing about what happened.

I feel like my dreams are animated. I'm not sure why. Or maybe that half animated bit like Mary Poppins, but not quite as bluebirds and butterflies and fish swimming through the air, more like Pink Floyd's "The Wall" but not quite as creepy.

I always want to go back to bed and finish the dream and remember it, but that never works. Then I just start trying to force things which sends my dream like thoughts into a loop, sort of like a skipping CD. But I can't help but be haunted by the feeling that whatever the innitial dream was, it was astounding and profoundly interesting.

How can Angela still be in the running? I mean she has absolutely no style!

sorry, had to just get that short rant out of my system. Yes, I am a Project Runway addict.
